SUPPORTING INFRASTRUCTURE

Facilities

USPMag provides facilities that support the different stages of research, from sample preparation and storage to magnetic measurements, data processing, meetings, and academic activities.

OUR FACILITIES

Integrated infrastructure

Each laboratory space serves a specific purpose in the scientific workflow, providing suitable conditions for sample preparation, measurements, storage, analysis, and discussion of data.

PREPARATION

Sample preparation room

Proper sample preparation is a fundamental step in paleomagnetic and rock magnetic analyses. USPMag has a dedicated area for cutting, drilling, and preparing geological materials, allowing samples to be produced in dimensions compatible with the laboratory’s different instruments.

Circular saws

Used to cut rocks.

Drill press

Used to obtain the cylindrical rock cores traditionally analyzed in paleomagnetism.

HIGH-SENSITIVITY MEASUREMENTS

Magnetically shielded room

Some magnetic signals studied at USPMag are extremely weak. To measure them accurately, the magnetometers are installed in a space designed to reduce the influence of the external magnetic field.

We currently have the largest magnetically shielded room in Latin America.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Shielding with high-permeability materials

The room’s walls consist of alternating layers of wood and sheets of grain-oriented silicon steel, a high-magnetic-permeability material that facilitates the conduction of magnetic flux.

Silicon steel provides a preferential path for magnetic field lines, concentrating and channeling part of the flux through the material and significantly reducing its influence inside the room.

The resulting environment provides suitable conditions for high-sensitivity magnetic analyses.

COLLECTION AND ORGANIZATION

Rock collection and sample storage

USPMag maintains a rock collection for organizing and storing materials used in research projects, teaching activities, and reference collections.

Proper organization of these collections helps preserve materials and maintain their traceability, enabling reanalysis, comparisons among techniques, and use in new studies.

WORK, COLLABORATION AND COFFEE

Workspace, collaboration and coffee

USPMag has a space for data processing, meetings, scientific discussions, and support for students and facility users. Officially, it is our meeting room; unofficially, everyone knows it as the Coffee Room.

Workstations

Computers available for data processing, visualization, and interpretation.

Meetings and scientific discussions

Space for project meetings, training, and academic activities.

User support

Workspace for researchers and students while using the laboratory facilities.

CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE
