ABOUT THE LABORATORY

Research, education, and infrastructure

The Paleomagnetism and Rock Magnetism Laboratory (USPMag), part of the Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of São Paulo (IAG-USP), provides specialized infrastructure for research in paleomagnetism, rock magnetism, and related fields.

In addition to its research and teaching activities, the laboratory operates as a shared-use facility, serving researchers and institutions interested in using its equipment and techniques.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Explore our infrastructure

USPMag offers specialized equipment and facilities for different stages of investigating the magnetic properties of natural and experimental materials.

Paleomagnetism

High-sensitivity systems for measuring remanent magnetization and conducting paleomagnetic experiments.

Rock magnetism

Characterization of magnetic properties, coercivity, susceptibility, and the magnetic behavior of materials.

Magnetic and thermal treatments

Facilities for demagnetization, remanence acquisition, and controlled sample treatments.

Microscopy and imaging

Resources for digitization, visualization, and characterization of samples and thin sections.

RESEARCH

Science at USPMag

Research conducted at the laboratory uses the magnetic record preserved in rocks, sediments, archaeological materials, and other natural materials to investigate processes ranging from the dynamics of Earth’s magnetic field to the planet’s environmental and geological evolution.

01

Paleomagnetism

Investigates Earth’s past magnetic field through the record preserved in geological materials.

02

Rock magnetism

Characterizes magnetic minerals in materials, their properties, and their magnetic behavior.

03

Environmental and geological applications

Helps reveal paleoenvironmental changes and geological processes through magnetic minerals.

USPMULTI NETWORK

Access our infrastructure

USPMag’s infrastructure is available to the scientific community through its shared-use facility.

Researchers from USP, other public institutions, and the wider community may request analyses and access to equipment according to the applicable access arrangements.

OPPORTUNITY

Grants USPMag

The USPMag Grants program offers undergraduate and graduate students free access to the laboratory’s infrastructure through calls for applications held twice a year.

Selected projects receive access to equipment and support from the USPMag team to collect the data needed for their research.
